What to expect on your first safari

If you've never been on safari, here's what a typical day actually looks like.

Early starts

Game drives begin at first light, when the air is cool and predators are most active. You'll head out shortly after sunrise with coffee and a light breakfast, then return to camp mid-morning as the heat builds and animals rest.

The afternoon drive

A second drive runs from mid-afternoon into sunset, often the best light for photography. Your guide reads tracks, radio chatter and animal behaviour to find sightings — patience is part of the experience.

What to bring in the vehicle

  • Binoculars (we can also provide these)
  • A camera with a zoom lens if you have one
  • Neutral-coloured clothing and a hat
  • Sunscreen — the equatorial sun is strong even when it's cool

Every drive is different. That unpredictability, paired with an experienced guide, is what makes a first safari memorable.
